Groundbreaking for the expansion of Svedjan wastewater treatment plant

Construction has been ongoing since winter, and on April 29, the official groundbreaking ceremony took place.

– It feels very good to be underway. We’ve had a strong start, not least thanks to favourable weather conditions, and the goal is for the facility to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027, says Anna Jakobsson, Project Manager at the Municipality of Boden.

During the construction period, the work will be noticeable in the area through increased construction traffic. Nearby residents may also experience higher noise levels at times.

– We are, of course, doing our best to minimise disturbances, but this is a major construction project and some impact is unavoidable, says Anna Jakobsson.

Enabling continued growth in Boden

The existing treatment plant is designed for approximately 30,000 population equivalents and is currently operating at full capacity. With the new process building, capacity will increase to around 40,000 population equivalents.

At the same time, the upgrade will enable the plant to meet both current and future treatment requirements, including the removal of pharmaceutical residues and microplastics. Following certain modifications, all parts of the existing facility will continue to play an important role in the new plant.

The total investment, including design and preparatory work, amounts to approximately SEK 415 million and is essential for Boden to meet regulatory requirements and support continued growth.

With a technical lifespan of around 100 years, the expansion is part of a broader effort to strengthen Boden’s water and wastewater system. This includes both new infrastructure and upgrades to the existing network to meet increasing environmental standards, climate challenges and the needs of a growing municipality.
