Stormwater Day all year round
On 24 September, Stormwater Day is observed across Sweden. Here in Boden, the centrally located Kvarnängen Stormwater Park is a shining example. Take the opportunity to visit it in its autumn colours and enjoy the site, which has also been developed with contributions from the construction and civil engineering programme at Björknäsgymnasiet.
Kvarnängen Stormwater Park is a unique stormwater solution created by Boden Municipality through broad collaboration across several departments. The park adds both form and function to Boden’s town centre. The location was chosen to promote educational, aesthetic and recreational values.
What is stormwater?
Stormwater is temporary flows of, for example, rainwater, meltwater, wash water and emerging groundwater. Stormwater becomes polluted when it runs over hard surfaces and picks up contaminants and nutrients. Some stormwater is partly purified in, for example, ditches before being released into a lake or watercourse. But some stormwater is directed straight into lakes and watercourses without any treatment at all.
What do we do?
We work based on the stormwater strategy, which supports the municipality’s comprehensive planning and sets the direction for the long-term planning of the physical environment. We also work continuously to integrate stormwater management into the development of creative solutions that can also serve as attractive places for residents to visit as our town and municipality grow.
How can I, as a resident, contribute to cleaner stormwater?
- Every year, large amounts of oil, heavy metals and other pollutants end up in nature because many people wash their cars in the street. By washing your car at a car wash, you can easily make a big difference for the environment.
- Use rainwater for watering by collecting it in rain barrels or tanks. This saves drinking water and is especially important in summers like the one we just experienced.
- Lawns and other plantings are the very best surfaces to absorb water and filter out substances such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Your lawn really does make a difference! From an infiltration perspective, gravel is better than asphalt for your driveway.
